Pop will take a backseat in 2012 With heavy hitters Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, and other regulars on the Billboard charts putting out albums this past year, they’ll be touring quite heavily for at least the first half of the year. Top seller Adele has also been inactive due to throat surgery, leaving her out of the studio for a while. A new Katy Perry album and Madonna’s comeback album may dominate the charts for a short while, but overall, mainstream pop will have less of a focus on it, giving way to… A resurgence in Rock With excellent Rock albums already released a month into the year (Guided By Voices, Cloud Nothings), and many planned (Rush, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, and Black Sabbath in classic rock, and The Killers, The Shins, Sleigh Bells, and more in indie-rock/pop-rock), this year is shaping up to be huge for Rock music. I’m predicting (and hoping) that people will actually turn their interests towards Rock this year rather than the digitalized, structured pop songs that seem to dominate the airwaves.
