For the first album in eight years, alternative rock legends Jane’s Addiction begin exactly where they left off. Despite the original line-up playing one-off shows around the world, the band hasn’t had the chance to record, until now. With TV on the Radio’s bassist, Dave Sitek, replacing the departed Eric Avery, the band finally settled down in the studio and gave us this solid work of hard rock. Album-openers “Underground” and “End to the Lies” are hard-rocking tracks in the vein of the classic, “The Mountain Song,” with Perry’s trademark echoing vocals and Dave Navarro’s masterful shredding at the forefront. It’s almost refreshing to hear quality hard rock like this, especially in the age of “Party Rock Anthem.” Immediately following is “Curiosity Kills,” a sort of psycho dance track. Dave Sitek, of TV on the Radio fame, contributes a dark bass line behind a constant bass-heavy beat and a megaphone-wielding Perry in one of the more eclectic songs on the album. Unfortunately, the album gets trapped in somewhat of a funk — first single, “Irresistible Force” trudges along with nothing special, give the humongous, sing-along chorus (which some may argue is overly dramatic).
